  • Is hell hades?

Tim Lehaye put out a pamphlet I picked up from church that said that hell and hades were two different places. Hades, he says, is a temporary place that ALL people go to when they die, believers as well as unbelievers. Then at judgment, the believers are taken to heaven and the unbelievers are sent to the "lake of fire"- hell.

That's the first I heard of that. I always thought hell and hades were one and the same. But they must be separate since in Revelation it says that death and hades were thrown into the lake of fire (hell).

    Any thoughts?

I believe they are separate too. And then Death and Hell are cast into the Lake of Fire in Revelation.

They are separate and Sheol (Aramaic ?) is the same as Hades (Gk) both are diff from hell.

Hell is where people go after being judged at the Great White Throne if they are not pardoned through Christ's atoning death on the cross--(He took our death sentence on Himself) . those who are dead and awaiting Judgement are in Hades--Sheol until the Great White Throne. Those who are "in christ" and have died are absent fromt eh body and present with the LORD --amen!!!

I also have to believe they are separate places. This is where the RC teaching on limbo comes from.

"Hades" does not appear in the New Testament at all in a KJV. However, the NASB uses "Hades" several times where the KJV uses "Hell" in the NT.

I am still of the belief they are separate.

I think LeHaye is incomplete in his stating that believers and unbelivers go to Hades. (The pamphlet had other errors, e.g., saying that 7 years is 42 months as stated in Revelation.) He doesn't separate Hades into Abraham's Bosom (believers) and Sheol (unbelievers) but rather that ALL go to Hades. In a way, that makes sense since the spirits of those believers who die before the Rapture must await the Bema Judgment, and they must wait somewhere. The same can be said for the unbelievers since at the final judgment they are cast into the Lake of Fire. They wouldn't go first to hell (the Lake of Fire), come back to get judged, and then go right back into it. Also, in Revelation it mentions the spirits of those martyrs who have come through the Tribulation, asking "how long must we wait?" Where are they waiting? Possibly in Abraham's bosom, in Hades. Also, there is Jesus himself on the cross telling one of the criminals "Today, you shall be with me in paradise." Did he mean in heaven, or in Abraham's bosom? If Abraham's bosom, does that mean Jesus himself visits us there?

              So many questions.

My pastor says Jesus emptied the Paradise side of Hades when He died. We see the bodies of several saints come out of the ground and walk around Jerusalem. Don't have the verse handy at the moment though.

And He, Jesus, was 3 days in the heart of the Earth.

Hmmmm. So, you are saying we go directly to heaven, and then get the Bema Judgment at the final judgment?

"3 days in the heart of the earth" Where in the Bible does it state that hell is in the center of the earth? I can just as easily state that heaven is in the ionosphere.

I'd be interested if you found the verse about spirits walking around Jerusalem.

Not saying Hell is in the center of the Earth. Just that Hades was there. The Torment side and the Paradise side.

Now that the Paradise side is empty, and Jesus is now at the right hand of God, as Paul says, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Happened after Jesus resurrected. So He emptied the Paradise side, my pastor says by this verse. They walked around Jerusalem:

                    Matthew 27:51-53 (King James Version)

                    51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

53 And came out of the graves after His Resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Psa 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, [for] the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell [among them].

Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Eph 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

Eph 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

1Pe 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

                          WLNF that is an understatement!
Just when you think your inlaws passed, and you were through with them for good, they come back for a visit.
I believe in Paul's statement, otherwise he wouldn't have made it.
We will be with the Lord, when we leave this body.
Whether we are in Hades, Abrahams Bosom (which I think is for Jews), or in Heaven, we will be with the Lord!
So I don't care where it is, because we will be with Jesus. ping:
