BRUSSELS - The representatives of the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM) met Tuesday in Brussels to agree to support the appointment of a Jordanian as General Secretary, an important step to revive the forum.
The decision should be taken in the afternoon.
The Jordanian candidate Ahmad Massa'deh, currently ambassador to Brussels, already has the support of several important countries of the UPM, including French and Egyptian co-presidency.
Senior officials must agree on a joint recommendation for their foreign ministers, known then to be approved "within two to three weeks," said the diplomatic source.
The future Secretary-General will be based in Barcelona with Palestinian, Israeli, Turkish and Arab League deputies.
The appointment of a secretary general should make it possible to prepare the Second Summit of the UPM, provided in June in Barcelona, under the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
France and Egypt provide the co-presidency of the UPM, created July 13, 2008 on an idea by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. It has about forty members, including EU countries, Turkey, Israel and Arab countries bordering the Mediterranean.
